The day began on a chilly note, and I wasn’t in the best mood after one of my doctors upset me. To top it off, I wasn’t happy with Grammie either—both of them were responsible for putting these uncomfortable braces on my feet. I made sure they knew how I felt, shooting them my best growl and an epic evil eye. Grammie insisted I wear those pesky braces during our drive to the Sanibel Island Lighthouse beach. But then, she redeemed herself by taking them off when we arrived and letting me play in the water. That made me happy again! For a little while, I even got to ditch my ventilator, feeding tubes, and O2 monitor and just enjoy the freedom of being a "free bird."
The water felt chilly at first, but I quickly decided I liked it. Grammie let me float on my back for a while, and my favorite nurse, Dawn, gently poured water over the back of my head to keep me cool. We had such a great time under the sunny sky, and lots of friendly people came over to chat with Grammie, Dawn, and—of course—me. They were curious about me and asked Grammie and Dawn all sorts of questions. It felt nice to hear them talk about me and explain Myotonic Dystrophy. Grammie always answers their questions with pride, and she loves to brag about how much progress I’ve made—progress the doctors back in West Virginia never thought I could achieve. Seeing how proud Grammie is of me makes me feel so good inside.
Grammie and my favorite nurse, Dawn, noticed some spots appearing on my arms, tummy, and legs that looked a bit like bug bites. That put an end to our fun because Grammie said my mommy used to get the same reaction when she was younger and out in the sun. Not wanting to take any chances of me getting burned like my mommy used to, Grammie decided it was best for us to pack up and head home. Once we got back, Grammie asked Dawn to keep a close eye on me. She explained that when this happened to my mommy, the spots would usually disappear within 30 to 45 minutes. Sure enough, all the spots were gone after about half an hour. Just my luck—another thing Mommy and I seem to have in common! To be safe, Grammie called my pediatrician to check if I might need a referral to see a specialist. Better to be cautious, just in case!
