Starting the new day with Zayden

Published on 9 February 2025 at 12:16

The day started early, administering Zayden's stomach medications at 5 a.m. While life with DM has its challenges, we feel fortunate compared to some families. Zayden only needs five medications. After his meds, it was time for a diaper change—just another routine task for any baby. Making the most of the time before his next dose, I prepared his formula for the day. Zayden's feeding schedule, varying in times, includes 900ml daily with a little extra for spills or any leftover formula when the feeding machine acts up. During this, I also manage his increased suctioning needs as they come up.

By the time I finish prepping everything (along with tackling six or seven other tasks I notice along the way), it's already time for Zayden's 7 a.m. medications. Once his meds are taken care of, I move on to preparing for his bath. Bath time is more than just a wash; it includes replacing his trach ties and changing the split gauze at both stoma sites. Before starting his bath, I make sure his 9 a.m. feeding is ready and running.

Essential Supplies for Zayden's Care include rounding up about 20 items to have ready at hand before beginning his Bath.

Once I gather all the supplies, I begin his bath, working from the top of his head to the bottom of his tiny Flintstone feet. I've included a link to videos of his bath routine below. After the trach tie change, I usually take a moment to let both Zayden and myself relax before finishing his bath.

There's also a third video showcasing Zayden's post-bath playtime with GG. It was a mix of sweetness and a bit of a scare for GG when Zayden added his playful surprises. By the end, Zayden needed another bath, a fresh set of clothes, and was ready for his morning nap.

As a precaution, I called Zayden's GI doctor after noticing his vomit contained what looked like partially digested blood. I didn’t want to take any chances. The GI doctor returned my call promptly and assured me there was no cause for concern. Based on my descriptions, the doctor believed the blood was likely due to Zayden cutting six teeth this week. Trusting my instincts paid off, and I felt relieved.

Now, it’s time for Zayden's 11 a.m. medications, followed by his 12 p.m. feeding. This Grammie is signing off for now—until the next update!
