When GG and Grammie woke up yesterday, they had no idea I was going to prove exactly who’s in charge around here.
Our morning started like any other. Grammie woke me up just before 5 a.m. for my breathing treatment and a quick diaper change. While that might seem early to some, it’s pretty routine for us. Typically, this would be the moment Grammie straps me into those annoying foot braces of mine. However, today was a bit unusual because Grammie had an outside work assignment. Knowing how much I love kicking off my braces—and how tough it can be for GG to keep putting them back on—Grammie decided to give us both a break for the morning. Freedom!
Before she left, Grammie made sure to wash me up and set out my favorite toys to keep me busy while she got everything organized for her departure. She and GG were ready to handle the morning solo for the first time. I think GG was a little nervous about it, but I knew I had it all under control.
Grammie switched my feeding machine from its nightly setting to the daytime one and set up a fresh feeding bag. She always marks the start of a new day with a bold black line on the bag. But just as she began preparing my 9 a.m. breakfast—120 ml of deliciousness—GG noticed something was off. The feeding formula was rushing out of the bag almost as quickly as Grammie poured it in! Turns out, the line on the new bag had a nasty tear. Grammie quickly stepped in to stop the mess from getting worse and had to prepare a completely new feeding bag. With everything reset, my breakfast could finally warm up naturally while GG got ready to feed me. Oh, and in the meantime, Grammie also managed to draw up and administer my meds using my new G-tube—all while juggling her own shower and getting prepped for her workday. Talk about multitasking!
Grammie muttered something about the morning trying to slow her down and making things unnecessarily difficult. Little did she know, I had plans to speed things up for her later in the day. Right before she left, she gave me a million kisses (okay, maybe not a million, but it felt like a lot), and honestly, I didn’t even realize how different today was going to be. After she left, GG played with me until I eventually drifted off for my morning nap.
But here’s the thing—I’m not used to Grammie being away. So, after my short nap, I woke up expecting to see her, and guess what? She wasn’t there. Naturally, I started crying. Not just a few sniffles, but full-on, attention-demanding wails. GG said I sounded absolutely pitiful. In a panic, GG called Grammie and made sure I could hear her voice through the phone. Her calming words soothed me for a few moments, but when Grammie explained she was far away, the waterworks started all over again. I made it very clear to both GG and Grammie that this arrangement was unacceptable. Doesn’t Grammie know she’s supposed to appear the second I open my eyes?
Apparently, Grammie thought it was time to teach me a lesson. When she got back, she promptly strapped those annoying foot braces on me and made me wear them for the rest of the day. Of course, I made it my mission to kick them off every chance I got. Grammie had to keep reattaching them, which meant I had her full attention every few minutes—just the way I like it! By the end of the day, I wasn’t crying anymore and even rewarded both GG and Grammie with some of my biggest smiles. After all, I like to keep them on their toes.
